Research Services: Supported Systems Report

A department-by-department count of every workstation, server, and infra system Research Services actively supports across Grainger College of Engineering research groups, cross-validated across the billing system, SaltStack, MECM/SCCM, and configuration-management metadata. Excludes Research Services' own internal test and administrative machines.

Methodology

Five sources, cross-validated

Research Services counts every supported system by cross-validating five independent systems of record, giving a more complete and accurate picture than any single source alone.

  • Service Billing app (My.ENGR Portal) — the definitive source for department and research-group attribution, and the anchor for the Linux population count.
  • SaltStack — confirms which Linux systems are online and under active management, including systems not yet reflected in billing.
  • MECM/SCCM — the definitive inventory for the Windows population, tracking devices continuously rather than at a single point in time.
  • Configuration-management metadata — supplies department and PI attribution directly from Research Services' own systems configuration.
  • File server transition records — captures file and home-directory servers as their management transitions to the EngrIT SEA team, so they stay reflected here while Research Services remains their system of record.
